Atlantis
A downloadable game
A sort of "remake" of Atlantis from the Intellivision - on the Sega Saturn.
Place your turrets to defend your city and shoot down aliens with the "Oracle", while the seal level continuously rises around your city.
Original background art and sprites by sherbul, programming and additional art by me, music by me and #mobygratis.
The theme of the jam was "Change", and the obvious tie in to that (thanks to my artist for pointing it out) was Climate Change. So, we made it so the sea level rises as the game progresses. We also wanted to have the backgrounds change to get darker/drier, have things like fires and floods, like the world was changing around your city, but we just didn't have the time.
Originally, we wanted to be able to build defenses for the city / collect resources, and obviously, have a complete gameplay loop, but I made a lot of progress in a few days, and learned some new stuff about the saturn (specifically tilemaps and the linescrolling feature).
This is also using my game engine for the Saturn, "Pixel Poppy Engine", which I am also working on - and doing this game jam really helped me improve that and find some shortcomings!
Features:
- Autodemo (moves between the title screen / demo mode / title screen / credits in a loop)
- Sound Test
- Particle Effects (title screen)
- VDP2 line scroll, transparency, and high-res mode (704x240)
Controls:
- Menu:
- Start, A, C: enter/accept
- B: cancel/back
- Gameplay:
- D-pad: move reticle
- Left/Right triggers: fast travel (scroll left/right)
- A: shoot from the Oracle
- C: place auto turrets
- Start: Pause menu
Gameplay:
- The playfield is 2048px wide
- You an place up to 9 auto turrets on screen to defend your base.
- Use the reticle or Left/Right triggers to scroll the screen so you can spread out your coverage.
- Use the reticle and the A button to shoot down as many enemies as possible
- You cannot die / there's no ending - but if the enemies get past you, they take away from your score.
- Some enemies are worth more than others, and also take away more points if you miss them!
- Watch the water level increasingly flood your city

You can play this on a real Sega Saturn - but of course, emulators work too! I recommend Mednafen (beetle core / retroarch etc.) or Ymir. FPGA consoles like the MiSTer probably work too.
If you have a slower computer, Ymir will run better than Mednafen, although Mednafen is still overall more accurate.
I would not recommend any other Saturn emulators, Yabause/Kronos will puke on the resolution mode / VDP2 registers I'm using.
Mednafen: https://mednafen.github.io/
Ymir: https://github.com/ymir-emu/Ymir/releases
For emulators, you will need a Sega Saturn bios file. Mednafen requires it specifically to be mpr-17933.bin - I can't post it here, but it is very easy to find. Ymir can use the same bios file (just select it in the menu). Mednafen requires you to put it in .\mednafen\firmware
